Dear Mr. Sands: One of the few serious disappointments I felt over my trip to London in October was my inability to get to Ireland. Jack Busby and I had, prior to the abrupt termination of dis- cussions, entertained the hope that we would be able to enjoy a week of walking about your green isle and even that we might succeed in persuading you to show us a few of your favorite fishing spots. And our discussions of the gentle art of fer- reting while you were in New York had caused me to anticipate seeing at least a brief demonstration of that sport, if it can be so called. But those pleasures, and others--including see- ing the shed where the "vital and highly confidential engineer- ing reports" constituting the famous Exhibit 94 reposed so long-- must await the next crossing. The Bausch & Lomb variable power scope which we saw together at the Sportman's Show has just reached the market, and the bugs which your keen eye observed have been eliminated. I wish you would let me know what make and model rifle you are using on crows and rabbits--perhaps the scope can be fitted to it and I would enjoy trying it out with you on my next trip. Mrs. Turner and I did a vast amount of shooting last summer and during my vacation I ran a daily class for the youngsters in our valley. My eleven year old daughter is now shooting with the rifle club's first junior team--composed of boys four and five years her senior--and is consistently shoot- ing 96-97 at up to 100 yards. I have had some fun, and derived considerable profit, from matching her against overconfident adults who believe that small bore rifles are not for little girls. The fishing--even with worms~--was poor because of the drought and resulting low, warm water. I saw a few nice browns, and one or two decent rainbows, but they were taken by fishermen far more expert than I. Your Christmas card and the flower seeds alleviated another basic disappointment of my ill-fated trip to London, when I had arrived too late to obtain any seeds. The combina- [Page 2] s tion of delphinium, sweet william and Russell lupines has long been the feature of my June garden; my lupines, which are rel- atively short-lived in our climate, had deteriorated and I am therefore particularly grateful for English seeds, which will find their place in front of the Cuthbert delphiniums I raised from seed brought me several years ago by the wife of one of my partners. I hope that you will sometime be able to see how close I can come to the glowing promises on the packets, with the help, of course, of a soil-testing kit! How did you find your pH? Matters drag along slowly here, and I shall be a lost soul when there are no more depositions to attend! Bruce Bromley was defeated for re-election to the Court of Appeals and will return next week to the bar from the bench; I will resume trying to explain converging links and control on the suction side and jigging and finding out that he is always two miles ahead of me! We miss you at our sandwich lunches and O'D, O'C, Kubiniec and Borker (who has sold his Rolls-Royce and thus deprived us of half our fun at those feasts) join me in wish- ing you and your daughters a peaceful and joyful New Year.
