William John Sands spent much of his working life alongside Harry Ferguson, contributing his engineering skill and practical judgement during the development of the Ferguson System and the modern agricultural tractor. Although his work helped shape a transformation in farming, his contribution has too often remained in the background of the better-known story.

This archive seeks to bring that contribution into clearer view. It tells William’s story through the evidence he left behind: letters, technical discussions, photographs, legal papers and personal recollections. These sources reveal not only the development of important ideas, but the working relationships, disagreements and persistent experimentation that made innovation possible.

Preserved by the Sands family across generations, the collection is still being researched, catalogued and interpreted.
